Achilles tendinitis is inflammation, irritation and swelling of the Achilles tendon (the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel). Achilles tendinitis is also called tendonitis of the heel. Achilles tendinitis is a condition of irritation and inflammation of the tendon off the back of the ankle. It connects the large calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the healing bone (calcaneus) and provides power to push off phase of the gait cycle. The Achilles tendon can become inflamed from overuse and a number of contributing factors. The Achilles tendon has a poor blood supply which is why it is slow to heal. Achilles may be tendoinitis acute or chronic. Acute Achilles tendinotis can happen as a result of overuse or training too much, too soon especially on hard surfaces or mountains. Treatment can include cold compression therapy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, ultrasound therapy, manual therapy techniques, a rehabilitation program, and in rare cases, the application of a plaster. injection of steroids is sometimes used, but must be done after careful reflection, examination of expert, because it may increase the risk of tendon rupture. Achilles Tendonitis Treatment
The most common treatments are: analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen) and physiotherapy. Treatment of a ruptured Achilles tendon includes surgery or a cast, splint, brace, walking boot, or any other device that will keep your leg from moving (immobilization). This gives time to cure the Achilles tendon, usually 6-12 weeks. Although the treatment of tendinopathy or rupture takes time, healing is usually successful.
