Plaxico Burress has been to find an answer to his foot and chronic pain ankle. He makes his living running routes and catching balls for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants with a nagging ankle injury, foot flat and a new pair of orthotics. Burress broke his orthotics in training and hopes to be ready for season opener week.
In May, Burress has been advised to use orthotics to help improve the function of his feet. He said took time to get fitted, and he did not start using them until recently. He admits it is painful after execution, but is much better. Functional orthotics are improving its approach so that it will not be as vulnerable to injuries as he was in the past.

An estimated 15% of the adult population complains of heel pain, which includes one million runners who experience heel pain (plantar fasciitis) every year. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons said that heel pain has reached epidemic proportions in weekend athletes. This common condition is usually ignored, especially by athletes. People tend to seek treatment only after the problem becomes severe and disabling or when they simply can not function. When problems Health foot are ignored, simple conditions can develop into more serious problems affecting the ankles, knees, hips or back. Orthotics are devices that fit in the shoe Using the foot and allow it to operate optimally. Relatively rigid in shoe braces that are designed for motion control and correct foot function are "functional orthoses. People who flatfeet, tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, knee, hip and back problems and certain foot deformities, may benefit from functional orthotics.
Will orthotics help my foot problems? The aim of the orthosis function is to control the abnormal movements in the foot, improving foot function, decrease pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or back and add support. The orthotic must stand, walk, run or more comfortable. The orthotic must be rigid to help control the movement in the foot and add support. If the orthotic is soft, the body weight would collapse the device and the would no longer function.
Functional orthotics are an effective treatment for many problems affecting the lower extremity. In a recent article in Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 75% of patients interviewed had good to excellent functional results of orthotics. This includes 17% who felt the orthotics "cured" of their pain. Less than 10% had no relief. A heel pain is the condition most frequently treated in the study. Over 20% of patients surveyed were treated for a painful heel and 20% were treated for a painful arc. Fourteen percent of people have been using orthotics for flatfeet. Other conditions have been treated with orthotics knee, hip and back pain, arthritis foot, onions and high arches. Tendinitis has not been specifically evaluated.
People with plantar fasciitis (Heel and arch pain) who also flatfeet generally respond best to orthotics. People with high arches may require orthotics well, but they do not react well. Orthotics can help slow the progression of onions and hammertoes, but they will not prevent this process. Orthotics can help with pain as an onion, but they will not "cure" the bunion. When the movement of the foot is contributing to the problem, Orthotics are generally recommended.
Podiatrists are the most common prescribers of orthotics, but pedorthotists, orthotists, physiotherapists and chiropractors sometimes also provide orthotics. Remember that the device is only as good as the doctor taking the mold and writing prescription. Make sure your doctor is trained in foot biomechanics and experienced in the treatment of orthotics.
Orthotics are indicated in the treatment of most foot pain. When used for the correct indications, braces are very effective in controlling of foot pain and may add pep to your step! Orthotics have helped Plaxico Burress conquer his chronic injuries and they can help you!
